Verity and Jacks left early the next morning. Verity was grateful, not wanting to run into Apollo again. After Jacksâ small plane touched down on her grass runway behind her cottage in Exuma, Verity thanked her for a fabulous adventure and for her generosity and friendship. Why did Apollo sound as if Jacks was unworthy in some way?
CHAPTER 13
Sunday, July 14
Verity had been invited to visit Rylan at his home in Moss Town, after the café closed on Saturday. He lived only a four-minute drive northwest from Casuarina House. Iâve been here since June 11; how odd that Iâm only seeing his house today on August 9, she laughed inwardly. Maybe he saves home visits only for special people, she imagined.
As her Vauxhall slowly rolled down Rylanâs gravel driveway, a black lab named Prints greeted her with a wagging tail and a bark that would likely alert Rylan to her presence.
Verity put the car in park, shut off the ignition, and leaned forward to peer at Rylanâs house out the front window of the car. The small stucco structure seemed typical of the houses she passed on her way to Moss Town. Rylanâs house was painted white and had a black asphalt, shingled roof. She reached for her purse on the seat beside her and opened the car door.
Prints was a welcoming committee of one as he wagged his whole back half and wrapped himself around Verityâs legs. Great watch dog. âHey there, Prints, old buddy,â she said in a high-pitched voice while vigorously rubbing the right side of the dog, followed by gentle head-patting and ear caressing. When she scratched his back near his tail, Prints almost bent in half with pleasure. Verity cradled his furry head in her hands and looked into his soft caramel eyes.
âLooks like youâve made a friend.â Rylan came down the short walkway looking as handsome as ever in his blue denim shorts, bare chest, and bare feet. He greeted Verity with a kiss on the lips, and she felt like the luckiest woman on the planet.
They walked by the side of the house with Prints trotting ahead of them. âOh, nice,â Verity said, admiring the view of the ocean and beach in his back yard. The palms and bushes around the house swayed wildly in the strong wind, causing them to shout over the swoosh. There was a badminton net strung across a floor of sand nearby Rylanâs outdoor bar.
âHmm,â said Verity, looking at the nine barstools placed around the bar, âlooks like the perfect party place back here.â Hanging above the bar was fishermanâs netting containing a couple mooring buoys and colorful nautical rope; a string of patio lights was fastened under the roof edge. Verityâs eyes were drawn to the familiar metal fish she recognized from Georgeâs Café and Lacey Jâs. âHa,â she exclaimed, âI see you brought a little bit of Lacey J to your home, Rylan.â
Rylan glanced at the three brightly-painted tropical fish that graced the back wall of his outdoor bar.
